Lo que nos dejó el Mundial de Futbol

Este verano se celebró la Copa Mundial de Fútbol en México, Estados Unidos y Canadá. La final se jugó el pasado domingo 19 de julio, donde España fue campeona venciendo a Argentina por el marcador de 1 a 0. Vi el partido por la TV y España tuvo un aplastante control del balón sobre Argentina; las estadísticas no mienten. Siento que fueron justos ganadores y debió haber sido un marcador más amplio. No hablaré sobre la final, que por cierto el show de medio tiempo me pareció horrible.

Varios partidos se disputaron en la Ciudad de México, Monterrey y mi bella Guadalajara. Tuve la fortuna de ir a uno de estos partidos en la etapa de playoffs, el partido fue entre Nueva Caledonia y Jamaica. Nunca esperé que el ambiente dentro del estadio fuera tan agradable a pesar de que no son selecciones relevantes, la afición increíblemente llenó el estadio Guadalajara. Y esta atmósfera y apoyo de la gente se vio reflejada en todos los partidos que se jugaron en México.

Un gran acierto de los gobiernos estatales fue habilitar los espacios públicos para el fan fest. Estos lugares fueron el ambiente idóneo para las muchas personas que no consiguieron boleto para asistir al estadio (carísimos por cierto). Noté que había muchos extranjeros de distintos países celebrando, sufriendo y disfrutando esta experiencia.

Algunas celebraciones estuvieron al límite de las leyes y otras pocas se salieron de control. En los primeros partidos, la organización de estos fan fest fue rebasada por la cantidad de personas que acudieron, sobre todo cuando jugó la selección mexicana, y peor fue cuando se ganaron esos partidos; la organización desapareció.

Hubo de todo: cánticos, festejos, cervezas, actividades, disfraces, personas arrojando en el aire a otras personas, torres hechas con vasos de cervezas, felicidad, enojo, malentendidos, discusiones, peleas, ganadores y perdedores. Una experiencia completa.

Las tres sedes de México fueron de las mejores en cuanto hospitalidad, apoyo y ambiente futbolero. Tristemente solo se jugaron 13 partidos de 104 (5 en Ciudad de México, 4 en Monterrey y 4 en Guadalajara), y aún así la gente respondió de manera eufórica como en una fiesta. Esto me da una pequeña esperanza de que México pueda hospedar otra Copa Mundial en solitario, como en 1970 o 1986.

Hablemos del equipo, de la selección mexicana. Creo que esta vez (desde Francia 1998) ha sido la mayor ilusión de ver este equipo en cuartos de final (nunca lo he visto) y muchas personas lo sintieron de esa manera. Como resultado de eso, se creó la famosa frase: Y si sí?

Lamentablemente no se consiguió y perdimos contra Inglaterra (quienes se quedaron con la medalla de bronce) en uno de los mejores partidos del campeonato. Honestamente dolió mucho ver esa derrota.

Aún así, disfruté mucho de ver tantos partidos. Aunque muchas veces lo bueno llega a su fin y muy probablemente ya no vea a jugadores top que vi desde adolescente. Por ejemplo Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Modric, Dzeko, Salah, De Bruyne, Courtois, Manuel Neuer, Guillermo Ochoa, Neymar, Casemiro, N'Golo Kanté, entre otros se retirarán y la lista podría crecer aún más antes de la siguiente Copa Mundial en 2030.

Por último quiero decir que ha sido una de las mejores Copas Mundiales que he vivido, quizás sea la favorita por el hecho de celebrarse en mi país y por haber tenido la oportunidad de asistir. Espero que la siguiente sea mejor y que también tenga la oportunidad de ver un partido en el estadio, lo que implicaría saltar el charco (España, Portugal y Marruecos). Confío en que el "y si sí?" se convierta en realidad.

What the World Cup left behind

The World Cup was held this summer in Mexico, the United States and Canada. The final was played last Sunday, July 19th, where Spain was crowned champion, defeating Argentina with a score of 1-0. I watched the match on TV and Spain dominated ball possession for most of the game; the statistics don't lie. I think they were fair winners and the score should have been wider. I won't talk about the final itself — the halftime show was horrible, in my opinion.

Some matches were played in Mexico City, Monterrey and my beautiful Guadalajara. I had the opportunity to go to one of those matches in the playoff stage - New Caledonia vs. Jamaica. I never expected the atmosphere inside the stadium to be that good, but it was really nice; even though those teams aren't too well-known, the fans somehow filled the Guadalajara stadium. And that energy and support were reflected in all the matches played in Mexico.

A great move by state governments was enabling public spaces for fan fest. These spots were the ideal atmosphere for a lot of people who didn't get game tickets (too expensive by the way). I noted there were many foreigners from different countries celebrating, suffering and enjoying this experience.

Some celebrations were at the edge of what's legal and other ones went out of control. In the first games, fan fest's organization was overwhelmed by the amount of people who showed up, and more when Mexico team played, and it went worse when the team won those matches; the organization disappeared.

It was everything: chants, celebrations, beers, activities, costumes, people throwing other people into the air, towers made of beer cups, happiness, anger, misunderstandings, discussions, fights, winners and losers. A complete experience.

The three Mexico cities were the best in terms of hospitality, support and football atmosphere. Sadly, only 13 football matches were played of 104 (5 in Mexico City, 4 in Monterrey and 4 in Guadalajara), and even under those conditions the people responded euphorically like a big party. This gives me a small hope that Mexico could host another World Cup, like in 1970 or 1986.

Let's talk about Mexico team. I think this time (since France, 1998) has been the biggest illusion to see this team in quarterfinals (I've never seen it before) and many people felt the same way. As a result, the popular phrase: "y si sí?" was created.

Unfortunately, we didn't reach that next phase and we lost against England team (who went on to win the bronze medal) in one of the best matches of the tournament. Honestly, it hurt a lot to see that defeat.

Even so, I really enjoyed watching many matches. Although many times all good things must come to an end and probably I won't see top players playing in other World Cup (2030). For example Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Modric, Dzeko, Salah, De Bruyne, Courtois, Manuel Neuer, Guillermo Ochoa, Neymar, Casemiro, Ngolo Kanté and many others will retire and that list could grow even further.

Last thing, I wanna say that it has been one of the best World Cups that I've lived, maybe the favorite one because it was held in my country and for getting to attend. I hope the next will be better and getting to watch one match in the stadium, which would involve crossing the Atlantic ocean (Spain, Portugal and Morocco). I trust in "y si sí?" will come true.

No les ha pasado que existe una cosa que queremos lograr, puede ser un objetivo, una meta, o un sueño.

Y por más que lo hayamos intentado, no lo hemos conseguido.

Puede ser el trabajo ideal, el amor de nuestras vidas, o el propio éxito.

Y por más que se intente, por alguna razón, no se consigue, ya sea por factores internos, externos, o algo aleatorio. Pero siempre fallamos.

Incluso, teniendo todo en contra, se podría decir que algo está conspirando contra nosotros o tenemos mala suerte.

Ya estamos mentalizados para fallar la próxima vez que lo intentemos.

Pero, Y si en esta ocasión lo conseguimos?

Un mes fuera de casa

Hace poco se presentó la oportunidad de hacer trabajo remoto en otro país gracias a una prestación que ofrece en la empresa donde colaboro.
Llevaba más de un año pensando en una oportunidad parecida, popularmente se imagina a uno trabajando desde una piscina o sentado en una playa. Sin embargo, mi situación será un poco lo opuesto.

Visitaré nuevamente a mi familia cerca de Chicago. La vez pasada llegué a su casa a finales de Octubre, cuando el otoño se encontraba en su apogeo. Esta vez decidí conocer lugar en primavera, veré si esos árboles tienen ese distintivo follaje color rojo-naranja.
Afortunadamente, la mitad de este periodo las tomaré de vacaciones para salir con mis primos y tíos. La otra mitad del tiempo tendré que laborar. Será una buena experiencia (eso espero).

Esta decisión no ha sido sencilla de tomar, ya que estaré por casi un mes completo fuera de mi hogar, lejos de mis padres, mi familia y mis amistades. Nunca había dejado mi hogar por más de 15 días, esta vez es casi el doble y honestamente me siento un poco incómodo.

Sumado a esto, dejo mi casa justo en el inicio de la temporada de lluvias y tormentas. Esto me pone algo nervioso siendo sincero, no estaré al pendiente si algo llegáse a suceder.
Por otro lado, mis papás me harán el gran favor de revisar la casa cuando puedan y esto me alivia un poco la ansiedad.

En fin, espero que sea una gran aventura y pueda disfrutarla.

One month out of home

The opportunity to work remotely in another country came up not long ago, thanks to a benefit offered by the company I work with.
I had been thinking about something like this for over a year. People usually picture themselves working from a pool or sitting on a beach. My situation, however, will be quite the opposite.

I'll be visiting my family again near Chicago. Last time I arrived at their place at the end of October, when autumn was at its peak. This time I decided to experience the place in spring. I'll see if those trees actually have that distinctive red-orange foliage.
Fortunately, I'll be taking half of this period as vacation to go out with my cousins and aunts and uncles. The other half I'll have to work. It should be a good experience.

This decision hasn't been easy to make. I'll be away from home for almost a full month, far from my parents, my family, and my friends. I've never left home for more than 15 days before; this time it's nearly double that, and honestly, I feel a bit uneasy about it.

On top of that, I'm leaving at the beginning of the rainy and storm season, which makes me a bit nervous. I won't be around to check if anything happens. On the other hand, my parents will be doing me the great favor of keeping an eye on the house when they can, and that does ease some of the anxiety.

Well, I hope it's a great adventure and that I can enjoy it.

Donde el silencio reina

Solo han habido muy pocas ocasiones donde el silencio reina en la ciudad durante un domingo por la tarde. No es cualquier ciudad, es una de las tres más grandes que tiene México: Guadalajara.

Las veces que no hay ruido en la calle es en Navidad y en Año Nuevo, y eso por que muchas familias festejan desde la noche anterior y terminan en la madrugada, seguramente con una resaca.

Pero esta vez ha sido extraordinario por que no tenemos ninguna celebración en particular. Esta vez, el miedo acompaña el silencio.

No quiero comentar el porqué de esta situación que está aterrando a toda la ciudad y alrededores, hay muchos medios hablando de esto y seguramente lo pueden explicar mejor que yo. Pero sí, es sobre un cartel y el gobierno.

Soy un afortunado por tener un día relativamente tranquilo. Los domingos por la mañana acostumbramos desayunar en familia en casa de mis papás después de ir a la iglesia. Mis papás tienen el hábito de ir al mercado para comprar frutas y verduras después del desayuno.

Mientras ellos estaban allá en el mercado, comienzo a ver en los grupos de Whatsapp un montón de noticias sobre la captura de un capo y sobre las consecuencias que han ocurrido tras este acto: avenidas principales bloqueadas por vehículos incendiados, tiendas de conveniencia incendiadas y enfrentamientos armados entre el cártel y policías.

A los minutos recibo una llamada de mis papás diciéndome que los habían desviado de su ruta de regreso, no sabíamos el porqué en ese momento (una gasolinera estaba en llamas). La incertidumbre suele ser bastante incómoda.

Gracias a Dios llegaron a salvo a casa y con las compras hechas. Vimos en las noticias que se activó el código rojo en toda la ciudad, que es una especie de toque de queda y todos debemos estar en nuestras casas para evitar alguna tragedia. Primera vez en más de 30 años que veo que se activa este protocolo en la ciudad. Recuerdo haberlo visto hace más de un año en la ciudad de Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Al ver esta indicación gubernamental, tuve que ir a mi casa para resguardarme. Lo bueno que vivo cerca de con mis padres y no me tomó mucho tiempo en llegar. Mi hermana, que es enfermera recibió la indicación del hospital donde trabaja de que no fuera a laborar. Aparentemente estábamos tranquilos.

Una vez en mi casa, comencé a leer mensajes de que todas las tiendas habían cerrado, el transporte público se encontraba suspendido y las calles de la ciudad estaban desiertas. Comencé a escuchar cercanamente las sirenas de bomberos, ambulancias y policías. Y después de una hora reinaba el silencio.

Muchas personas que estaban fuera de casa, tuvieron que esperar horas a que se tranquilizara la situación. La vida y la muerte era como arrojar una moneda al aire.

Actualmente mi familia y mis amigos se encuentran bien. Han ocurrido pérdidas materiales de algunos civiles que tuvieron la mala suerte de ser despojados de sus vehículos o comercios y algunas bajas entre fuerzas armadas y el cártel. No sabemos si esto durará días, o meses como en Culiacán. Esto es parte de nuestra realidad.

Where silence reigns

There are very few occasions where silence reigns in the city during the late afternoon. It's not just any city, it's one of the three biggest cities in Mexico: Guadalajara.

During Christmas and New Year's, there is usually no noise on the streets, as many families celebrate from the night before until the early morning with a feast and party.

However, It had been extraordinary this time, because we don't have any special holiday or celebrations. This time, the fear is accompanied by silence.

I'm not going to talk about why this situation is affecting the entire city and its surrounding areas; there are many news and media reporting on it and they can probably explain it better than I can. This is about a cartel and the government.

I consider myself fortunate to have a relatively serene day. On Sunday mornings, we usually eat breakfast together at my father's house after church. My parents have the habit of going to the market after breakfast to buy fruits and vegetables.

While they were there in the market, I began to see a lot of news about the capture of a capo and the consequences of this act, such as blocked main streets with burning vehicles, convenience stores burned down, and armed confrontations between the cartel and police.

After a few minutes, my parents called to inform me that they had deviated from their return route, and we had no idea why (a gas station was on fire). Uncertainty may be really uncomfortable.

Thanks to God, they arrived safely at home and with everything they needed. We saw in the news that the red code was activated throughout the city, indicating a type of curfew, and that everyone should stay in their homes to avoid tragedy. This is the first time in over 30 years that I've seen this protocol used in the city. I remember seeing him more than a year ago in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

I had to go home to protect myself after seeing this government instruction. I'm glad I live near to my parents and it didn't take me long to get there. My sister, who is a nurse, received notification from the hospital where she works that she should be unable to work. We appeared to be at peace and safe.

When I arrived home, I saw messages reporting that all stores were closed, public transportation had been suspended, and the city streets were deserted. I started hearing ambulance and police sirens nearby. After an hour, silence reigned.

A lot of people who weren't at home had to wait hours for the situation to calm down. Life and death looked like flipping a coin in the air.

My family and friends are now doing well. There have been material losses for some civilians who were forced to abandon their vehicles or businesses, as well as multiple deaths among armed forces and the cartel. We are not sure if this will last days or months, like in Culiacán. This is part of our reality.

Segundo blogiversario

El tiempo pasa volando muy rápido, y cuando menos lo esperas ya han pasado dos años desde que se lanzó este espacio virtual en internet. Es un buen motivo para celebrar con una cerveza o con un café.

Este proyecto comenzó como un hobby y ahora me ayudado mucho en diferentes aspectos, como adquirir una nueva habilidad profesional con el desarrollo web, mejorar mi redacción y conectar con nuevas personas. Ahora lo veo como algo parte de mí. Sin embargo no todo va tan bien como quisiera.

Voy a ser honesto, ha sido difícil encontrar un tema de cuál escribir, he sentido un bloqueo mental sobre el desarrollo de los temas, tengo varias notas inconclusas que no he dedicado el tiempo a terminarlas y eso me desmotiva.

No estoy seguro si esto sea falta de disciplina o motivación, y es por esto que hay menos posts en este segundo año que en el primero. He estado ausente en la participación del Indie Web Carnival también.

Pero bueno, no todo es malo. A lo largo de este segundo año, he implementado varias actualizaciones a este blog, desde visuales (UI) como el re-work de los estilos y agregué un espacio para compartir todos los videojuegos que he jugado.

En la parte de estadísticas, puedo decir que se han agregado 10 posts en inglés y 10 en español. Espero que en este camino al tercer año pueda al menos duplicar esta cantidad.

Por último y muy importante es agradecerte estimado lector por pasarte por aquí 🫶.

Second blogiversary

When you don't expect it, two years have gone by since this virtual space launched. Time flies quickly. This is a great incentive to enjoy with coffee or beer.

This project, which began as a hobby, has now benefited me in multiple ways, including bringing me new professional skills in web development and allowing me to connect with new people. I now consider it to be a part of who I am. But things aren't going as smoothly as I had hoped.

To be honest, finding a topic for writing has been difficult; I've had a mental block over topic development, and I have some unfinished notes that I haven't dedicated time to finishing; this is discouraging myself.

I'm not sure if this is a lack of discipline or motivation, which is why there are fewer posts compared to the prior year. I have also been absent from the Indie Web Carnival.

Okay, things are not that horrible. Throughout the second year, I made various changes to this blog, some of which were UI-related, such as styling re-work, and I created a section for tracking any videogames that I've played.

IIn terms of statistics, I can say that 10 new English and Spanish posts have been added. I'm hoping that by third year, I'll be able to add twice as much.

Finally and most importantly, thank you for taking the time to read this 🫶.
